A bowl of oatmeal provides a substantial part of the body’s daily requirement of fibre, essential fatty acids, vitamin E and protein. As a great source of whole grains, oats contain a heart-protective starch known as beta-glucan that aids in reducing high cholesterol and the risk of certain cancers.
To make quick porridge, bring 1 cup of oats to a gentle boil in 2 cups of liquid – either half-half water and milk, or just milk of your choice. Add a pinch of salt and a little honey or maple syrup to taste.
Cook, stirring on a low to medium heat for 2-3 minutes to create creamy porridge. Quick oats are also suitable to be cooked in a microwave or by soaking in freshly boiled water.
